Idiosynchratic Tautology

Idiosyncratic Tautology - Idiosynkratische Tautologie
by Carsten Brombach, Germany

exhibit Nr.53

Description: 5 Letters (appr.6x4 cm) spelling out the word Paris, cut from Index Prints of two films taken in that same city.

Comments/Origin: The pictures were taken during a temporary job in Paris (March/April 2002). To define Paris in terms of photos of Paris seems somewhat tautological; however, since the selection of motives is always a highly personal matter (as, if nothing else, the dot on the I goes to show), it only is tautological assuming a common set of selective principles between the person having taken the pictures and the person looking at the letters. It is, in other words, merely an idiosyncratic tautology.
